On the Topic of Service Integration
The theme for this month’s newsletter is Integration. Working together is important for the success of so many
things. I have found that your plan is so much better when I know more about your entire situation. Why is it
important to know that you are considering buying a retirement home or that you have a big tax liability coming
in a few years? Why should I be aware of the balance and rate of your mortgage or that you have stock options
and other investment accounts? Why does it benefit your plan on the whole to apprise us of large cash balances
at other institutions? I may not necessarily know at the time, but experience has taught me that amazing things
can happen when all the pieces of the puzzle can be seen.
For example, recently a new client came to me and said he felt that he was paying too much income tax. He felt
this way because IRA withdrawals were being taken as required and the income tax was also being withdrawn
from the IRAs. I was able to look at the other parts of the portfolio and see that some of his investments had
very little profit or, in the vernacular of tax planning, high cost basis. We integrated the IRA required minimum
distributions with sales of those investments in order to lower the annual tax bite: simple, elegant and easy when
I can see the whole picture.
Your estate plan is integrated with your investment portfolio in order to make your and your heirs lives easier.
Years after you focused your energy and understood how it all works together, the documents you spent so
much time developing will only do the job you intended if they still work with your plan. I know how important
this can be. I made mistakes on my own Mother’s plan. It cost me time, money and relationship tension with my
brothers all for lack of completing the last step in the plan of action, transferring the money into the newly
opened Roth IRA accounts. The accounts had newly devised beneficiary designations. Mom got sick and it
dropped through the cracks as we focused on a care plan. I know how important it is to get things thought out
and make certain all the details are complete. It takes very tight integration and it is not always easy, but
Dominion Wealth is with you every step of the way.
Dominion Wealth Management (and Financial Strategies Group prior) was founded on the premise that you
wanted a holistic perspective and operation for your entire plan. It has worked well, but we want it to work
better. As income tax time approaches, I want to get that part of your life better integrated with your
investments and other parts of your plan. However, I need your help.
Do you have a tax preparer that you would like me to meet? The perfect candidate will be a holistic and
forward-looking person. The next important characteristic is a modern practice that supports electronic
communication, storage and retrieval of all your important data. Oh, did I mention it will be a plus if they are
also fun to work with?
I am very serious about this and really appreciate your thoughtful referral.
Cassi, Matt, Adam and I thank you for your continued confidence. Have a nice Thanksgiving!
Best regards,
